NMT for TMJ
What does any of that mean?
NMT stands for Neuromuscular Therapy, and TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint.
Many people suffer from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, Dysfunction, or Discomfort.
NMT for TMJ is performed by a Licensed Massage Therapist certified in NMT for TMJ including intra-oral work. The therapist will work on the muscles that surround and attach to the Temporomandibular Joint, including muscles of the neck, head, face, mouth, tongue, and eyes. This treatment is NOT a relaxing massage experience. NMT for TMJ requires therapist/client interaction during the session where the therapist will be checking in with the client on pressure being applied, the client may be asked to open their jaw against resistance being applied by the therapist and other things of that nature. This treatment is part of a wellness process and will require multiple visits for several weeks while the therapist works to improve TMJ function. On average, appointments will last 30 minutes, 2-3 times a week, for 4-6 weeks. Maintenance appointments will follow, but not as frequently. Our goal is to get you better. In most cases, results are seen after the first treatment session, but muscles have memory, which is why we develop a treatment plan where you return regularly, to help teach the muscles the new, proper pattern in which they should work.
